In three years time, 19-year old Able Rating Cartwright can leave the Royal Navy. By then he hopes to be apprenticed to an electrician.

- I joined the Royal navy in May 2005 and am one of the youngest on board the HMS CORNWALL, says Cartwright.

He’s correct title is Marine Engineer Mechanic Cartwright, as the Royal Navy names the crewmembers by function in stead of by rank.

-While I am onboard the HMS CORNWALL, I gain qualifications for my future education. My primary areas of responsibility on board at the moment are the freezers and the water systems, but I also take watch in the engine room, Cartwright continues.

Cartwright normally works eight hours a day, but when HMS CORNWALL participates in an exercise like DANEX 06, he works two six-hour shifts a day.

A friend of his encouraged him to join the Royal Navy, which he does not regret:

- Over the first 16 months I have had a lot of great experiences along with my friends onboard. When in a foreign harbour, it is possible to get ashore. I enjoyed our stay in Aarhus, Denmark, and ahead of us await five days in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, when exercise DANEX 06 comes to an end.
