An increased piracy activity off the Vendthian coast led during the summer of 2008 to an international debate as how to deal with the problem. Not only have the piracy led to significant economical losses for the civilian operated companies and their flag states but more importantly, it was documented that local warlords, clans and terrorists to a considerable degree were funded by these criminal activities. However, the state of Vendthi is one of anarchy, marked by inter clan fighting and random banditry and piracy.
June 2008
On 12th of June 2008, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) denounced Vendthian leaders for their reluctance to cope with the increasing piracy activities off the coastline of Vendia. In spite of the fact that more than 90% of the piracy activities within the region are originating from Vendthi, the military leaders in control of Vendthi repulsed to accept facts and resisted consequently to deal with such “affronting acquisitions” as imposed by the UN.

Following endeavouring negotiations at the political level and upon UN request to NATO, a coalition of NATO members volunteered to operate in support of UNSCR 6199. As a direct consequence, TG 475.10 were formed on 31st July 2008.
Iaw. UNSCR 6199 the strategic end state of the coalition was defined as “To ensure safe sea lines of communication within international water in the northern part of Kattegat and adjacent seas”.

On 3rd September 2008, the MNTG 475.10 sat out for sea and commenced the transit towards the Kattegat area off the coast of Vendthi.
SOTG (TG 475.20) was formed on 5th September and embarked during tactical call at friendly port Aalborg. Main objective of TG 475.20 is to facilitate a credible capability to conduct direct counter action if/-when merchant shipping is hijacked within the AOO.
During the deployment and since the 8th of September 2008, TG 475.10 and TG 475.20 have conducted a very intense CET/FIT programme and are now considered fully mission capable.
SOF were infiltrated into Vendthian territory on 8th of September 2008, with the aim of observing activities on the hijacked ship and thus establish a recognized modus amongst the pirates.
Reports from infiltrated SOF indicate a clear link between pirates on the hijacked ship and 3 camps ashore in the Vendian region. Observations furthermore indicate that camps ashore not only constitute a safe heaven for the pirates but also appear to be strongholds for Vendthian Rebels.
The sovereign state of GERMANIA have as a response to the UNSCR 6199 and the deployment of the MNTG contributed to an increased tension within the region as GERMANIA does not accept UN or NATO supported units within the region.
On 12th September 2008, the Germanian governmental spokesman announced that UN and NATO obscure aggressiveness and imperialistic behaviour for sure would lead to an armed clash with Germanian Armed Forces and he urgently requested both the UN and NATO to reconsider the deployment of a maritime Task Group to the region.
