Ice Breaking Service

Ice breaker THORBJOERN at work

The Ice breaking service performs Ice breaking and other assistance to shipping when ice condition makes ice breaking necessary.

The Ice Breaking service has at its disposal 2 naval Ice Breakers. In addition to the naval Ice Breakers the Ice Breaking service may also use resources that are suited for ice breaking such as tugboats and similar. Such resources are either chartered for a single task or a time charter.

The Ice Breaking service also makes use of fixed stand by agreements. For example in order to have ice breaking resources available for ice breaking in the Limfjord West of Aalborg the Ice Breaking service has an agreement with a tugboat company to have a tug boat on 24 hours notice .

The Ice Breaking Service is ready for action each winter from the 15th of December to the 31 of March. In this period the 2 naval ice breakers ISBJØRN and DANBJØRN are on notice.

The Ice Service continuously monitors the situation in the Danish waters.
