A slow flying aircraft can be a serious threat – but it can also be a civilian plane without relation to DANEX 08

It is aircraft and pilots from the Royal Danish Air Force Flying School in Karup and the Danish Home Guard’s Flying Unit that makes up the threat from so called low slow flyers for the ships in DANEX 08.

One of these missions was flown from Sindal Airport by the Danish Home Guard’s Flying Unit which today has eight rented planes at their disposal all over the country. Commander was Captain (a) Poul Erik Bech who had the pilots Peter Adser-Larsen and Thorkild Højland Larsen with him in a Cessna 182.

We’re going to fly different profiles against a part of the naval force which today is located off Vendsyssel. We have about 15 minutes transit to the ships. Thereafter we can be active for an hour and a half, says Poul Erik Bech. He has had his flying certificate for a couple of years.

The profiles of the mission are decided by the Naval District of Kattegat that has planned and is coordinating the enemy activities during DANEX 08. The profiles can be everything from a plane with a defect radio, that doesn’t hear the radio calls from the ships to fly around their security zone, a businessman who is to busy reaching a meeting and therefore refuses to change course around the ships to terrorists who will fly directly towards a ship in a suicide mission.

Missionens profiler er bestemt af Kattegat Marinedistrikt, der har planlagt og kooordinerer fjendemomenterne under DANEX 08.

The Danish Home Guard’s Flying Unit has the goal to have four crews for each of the eight planes. The unit based at Sindal Airport has not yet reached this level.

– We intended to help both the defence and the police, when there’s a need. It can be in connection with exercises, traffic surveillance, speed control and search for personnel. Our unit is fairly new and is still being build, says Poul Erik Bech.
