News from Exercise DANEX 08 

After two hectic weeks at sea with hard work and many challenging tasks the DANEX exercise is now over.

Exercise DANEX 08 ended with an extensive operation to save the hostages on board the ship that was hijacked more than a week ago.

It has been a busy night for the ships participating in DANEX 08. And there are still many challenges before the exercise is over.

Tonight DANEX 08 moves into the final phase. Now the ships really will be tested in an exercise where – almost – everything can happen!

With lots of guests on board during DANEX 08 everybody is busy on ESBERN SNARE. That certainly also goes for the galley.

It was a part of DANEX 08 when the Danish Frogman Corps on the night between Friday and Saturday freed a hostage held by pirates.

An important tool for investigating whether a merchant vessel is carrying smuggler goods is to go on board and have a look.

A gigantic column of water rose in Sejerø Bight when the mine clearance vessel STØREN yesterday detonated a mine.

By means of a helicopter and a rope it is possible to get quickly on board a ship. The technique is called fast-roping and it is also trained during DANEX 08.

The ship’s surveillance radar can be jammed so that the operator doesn’t see an approaching aircraft. During DANEX 08 this kind of warfare is also practiced.

Good co-operation with civilian shipping is important – also during DANEX 08.

The corvette HDMS OLFERT FISCHER’s one propeller is damaged after hitting the ground at Sjællands Odde.

The Admiral Danish Fleet, Rear Admiral Nils Wang, has today started a tour of the Danish ships which participate in DANEX 08.

A slow flying aircraft can be a serious threat – but it can also be a civilian plane without relation to DANEX 08

DANEX 08 also has mine countermeasures on the programme. It is good training for the Danish staff that next year will lead one of NATO’s standing MCM-forces.

A hostage drama is unfolding in Northern Jutland. Luckily it is just a part of DANEX 08.

The sound of shots fired is cracking on the signal deck of ESBERN SNARE. The target is a small plane that attacks the ship but luckily only to train the crew.

The annual DANEX Olympics were held this afternoon while the ships again were open to the public.

The Danish Naval Band kept the stroke when this year’s DANEX church march made its way trough the streets of Aalborg.

Two petty officers from OPLOG Frederikshavn are liaison officers for foreign ships and planes during DANEX 08.

The combined team from HDMS VIBEN and HDMS SKADEN won the final over HMS GLOUCHESTER with the score 4-3.

Many people used the opportunity today to visit the DANEX ships which were open to the public.

The weather was autumn-like but beautiful when the DANEX-ships this morning glided into Aalborg harbour.

During DANEX 08 the Danish Frogman Corps is supported by SSR – The Danish Home Guard’s Special Support and Recce Company.

The ships participating in DANEX 08 are on their way to Aalborg. Ahead lies a weekend with exciting events and activities.

A warship must be able to protect itself against both big and small threats. Therefore self defence is trained as a natural part of DANEX 08.

The Sun was shining down on Frederikshavn, when HDMS ESBERN SNARE went to sea this morning to start the annual DANEX-exercise.

Several of the ships participating in DANEX 08 have today conducted a gunnery exercise. This is also the case for ESBERN SNARE.

Exercise DANEX 08 takes place in the timeframe 3rd - 16th of September 2008.
