In 2025, Denmark initiated a defence cooperation programme with the Eastern European country of Moldova. Moldova borders Ukraine and is a candidate country for EU membership.
The purpose of the cooperation is to strengthen Moldova’s military capabilities and the country’s resilience to current and future threats. Moldova faces pressure from Russian influence and hybrid threats.
The defence cooperation includes training, advisory support, education programmes, donations of equipment and the deployment of advisors.
The Danish Ministry of Defence has allocated DKK 50 million to the programme for the period 2025–2028.
The military component of the Moldova programme focuses on strengthening Moldova’s armed forces.
The Danish Armed Forces provide personnel for education and training activities. The Danish Army Command, Special Operations Command, Home Guard Command and the Royal Danish Defence College all contribute personnel.
Training is conducted through mobile training teams and courses held in Denmark in order to support Moldova’s transition to Western military doctrines.
The support includes academic cooperation, training of military police, engineer personnel and shooting-range instructors, as well as officer education in leadership and pedagogy and training in the use of donated equipment.
As part of the programme, Denmark will also deploy a defence attaché to Moldova.
The Danish programme in Moldova forms part of Denmark’s broader peace and stabilisation efforts and runs until 2028.
