The recently signed contract between DFDS and the Danish Defence is an extension of the current agreement formed in 2020. The agreement includes DFDS providing up to eight ships for the ARK project, thereby also supporting the transportation of equipment and vehicles in connection with exercises and missions.
The ships are chartered and can be made available to the Danish Defence on short notice. The agreement follows the principle that has been followed for many years, where the ships are optimally utilized, with DFDS using them during periods, when the Danish Defence and allied forces do not require them for transporting equipment.
An Agreement on Strategic Transport
The contract has been made with the strategic transportation unit of the Danish Defence, Joint Movement and Transportation Organization (JMTO), and the ARK project, which is a long-standing and successful collaboration between Denmark and Germany ensuring secure access to sea transport.
The agreement also ensures that, in addition to the ARK partners Germany and Denmark, the ships can also be used for transporting material for allied forces. This strengthens Denmark and Germany's reputation among our allies and provides valuable opportunities for training and practicing sea transport, both for the Danish Defence and the ship crews.
"We have had a good cooperation with DFDS for many years regarding ships for the ARK project, and I am pleased that this can continue. As the political situation evolves, it becomes even more important that we have reliable and stable providers who can support the Danish Defence and our allied partners with secure access to strategic sealift capacity, which this agreement ensures," says the Commander of JMTO, colonel Jacob Barfoed.
